Jing Shijian, called “Old Jing” in the art circles, is one of the representative figures of “Figurative Expressionism” in China Academy of Art. His art style seems exceptionally lucid and lively, while the inner quality and formal language are extremely profuse and romantic. As he has lived beside the West Lake for more than two decades, this northeasterner always maintains the distinctive straightforwardness and aliveness in his personality. Therefore, Xu Jiang, director of China Academy of Art and Jing’s doctor advisor, often compares him to “a wolf from the North”.
Old Jing’s creative passion and capability are quite amazing. For many years, his achievements in the fields of oil painting, sculpture, sketch, watercolor, print, installation, and etc, often surprise his fellow artists. Meanwhile, this prolific artist commendably keeps the consistency of his works’ high level, permeating the free and easy visual effects with unadorned ancient traditions and elegant academic taste.Drama and humor are importantphenomena in Old Jing’s works. Though the images in some of the works are admirably direct and simple, the connotations of quite some works are actually obscure and profound, sometimes even full of suspension. In an epoch without balance of values and among the obscure landscapes, deliberate and sensitive Old Jing appropriately reveals the intellectuals’ perplexity, exhaustion and hesitation and the current civilization’s loneliness, impotence and speechlessness.
This exhibition’s title is “Rowing a Boat”, which implies two connotations. The first is mankind’s appreciation of and attachment to the mountains and rivers in the natural environment; the second is highly civilized mankind’s profound experiences in the complicated social environment. In everybody’s mind, isn’t there a torrential and treacherous world?I hope this touching and meaningful exhibition could enable us to review our own unique experiences in the world.
